Every time I start the computer, it searches (A: lights up and clicks) for 10 - 30 seconds before continuing the startup procedure and completing it. Any ideas? Thanks

Check for BIOS setting "seek on POST". also should do it if the boot order is a,c.
Mine seek twice since both are enabled. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply. Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

This might be easier:

Right click My Computer, click the Properties button, then click the Performance tab.

Click the File System button then click the Floppy Disk tab.

Clear the option to 'Search for new floppy disk drives each time your computer starts'.

I'll throw this in since you didn't mention exactly when in the startup procedure this occurs. If it's happening late, after Windows has started to load, you might check any anti-virus software you have. Some of them can be configured to check the A drive on startup.

Hi,

Checj in the BIOS, what is the boot order. Check its not set to something like, Floppy, CD, Hardisk.

Its best to have Hardisk as the first boot device..

When the machine boots up, you will get a message saying PRESS ** to enter setup.

Depending on the model of machine this can be F10, F2, CTRL+ALT+ESC.

Once there look for something Boot Order, or Boot Devices.

Make sure you save any changes you make and reboot.

BUT PLEASE BE CAREFUL HERE, IF YOURE NOT CAREFUL YOU CAN REALLY MESS THINGS UP HERE. IF YOURE NOT SURE WHAT SOMETHING IS, DONT CHANGE IT!!!!

Paul If aint broken, dont try n fix it!!!!!

A freind had the problem of the A:/ being searched for
10-30 seconds on start-up. A neighbor fixed the problem by the following steps: START, SETTINGS, TASKBAR & START MENU, START MENU, then clicking on CLEAR in the DOCUMENTS MENU. Now it works fine..

I appreciate all the suggestions to my original posting. Thank you.
