I have a pentium 450 with 256 RAM. Since I upgraded to Windows XP the computer will shut down and restart in the middle of a program. Does anyone know what causes this problem? thanks Petersen
The automatic restart is caused by a setting under Start--Control Panel-->System, Advanced tab, then Startup and Recovery. Uncheck the box to automatically restart.
You might be able to find the cause of the random fault by checking for errors reported in the Event Viewer under Administrative Tools.
you can get this problem if you are using 2 different sets of incompatible SDRAM chips. Try to change the SDRAM to a single module and see if this fixes it.
after turning off the auto-reboot (as talked about above) XP will show you the error message when it crashes, I have had that problem at one time anf foulnd it to be caused by either "bad" drivers or programs not written/test for XP. Take the error message you get and go to Microsofts website and search using the error number or title and you should find something. You know, this is our conclusion.....our computer is possessed!!! We have tried the suggestions, and turning off the automatic shut down did help, but now we get the blue screen of death every so often. We're wondering about reformatting the hard drive and calling a priest over(ha ha ha). If anyone knows of any other ideas let us know. Thanks
I had the same problem with XP a few months ago. I ended up downloaded every patch available for XP on Microsoft's website. I don't know exactly which patch solved the problem, but the blue screens of death and the reboots are now gone.

Hi I am responding to the problem peterson is having with his system. First of all I would check your computer power supply that all voltages are present. One way as a solution is to replace the power supply and see if this resolves your problem. It sounds to me that their is a power fluctuation which results in your machine to reboot. Also it is a good idea to check your CPU and memory. But my guess it is your power supply. Without seeing the problem at hand I reckon this is the case.
