I have Win2K Pro and am having the following issue for the 2nd time now. When I attempt to install a new plug and play device (last time it was a Canon digital camera, this time it is an Epson printer) the computer restarts itself as soon as I connect the device. It will say "found new hardware" and then restart. It will continue to reboot until I unplug the device from the USB port. I have the problem whether using a hub or the root hub. I have no problem using my Canoscan Scanner or Kodak digital camera in the same ports. This is driving me nuts... please help!!

What service pack is your current W2K installation .

Oh goodness. I'm sorry... I don't know. Is there a way I can check that?

Do you know the brand and model and manufacturer of the PC.

(The motherboard name/make/version is usually printed on the board , so if you open the case you should se it .)

You know we that try to help are not mindreaders , we have to have some detailed info to help out .

By the way is there some errors in the eventlog when this happends ,that would be a god help here in the forum .

Event log :
Open control panel - Administrative tools - Event Viewer
(system and application would be the ones to look at )

I'm doing the best I can... not sure what info you need.

I have a Dell Dimension L500r.

Upon opening my case I found a lot of dust, but didn't see a label on the motherboard.

The event viewer shows multiple "Service Control Manager" errors as well as "Dhcp" errors for today, when I tried to install the printer.

Do you install the driver cd for the epson and the canon before yo plugged it in . I recommend that .

Determining the USB Ports for Windows® 2000/XP

Left-click the Device Manager icon.

Right-click the My Computer icon and select Manage.

Left-click the plus (+) sign next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

If Enhanced Host Controller and/or USB 2.0 Root Hub Device is listed, then the computer has USB 2.0 ports.

If Universal Host Controller and/or Open Host Controller is listed, then the computer has USB 1.1 ports.

NOTE: If Universal Serial Bus Controllers is not listed, there is a problem with the USB controller or the USB controller is not enabled in the computer's BIOS. Enter system setup and enable USB.

To enter the BIOS, CMOS, Setup, or the System Setup on Dimension systems, perform the following steps:

Restart your system.

As the system reboots, press the <Delete> key.

Generic USB Hub, Intel(r) 82801AA USB Universal Host Controller, and USB Root Hub are listed. So I guess I have USB 1.1 ports.

That is interesting, but it doesn't help me with my issue as I do have USB devices that are working.

Although I don't think this is really the right solution, I was able to fix my issue by putting plug and play on "manual" setting. Of course, this has some minor drawbacks, but at least all my devices are working. I'd still like to solve the issue though, if anyone knows what the problem might be. Thanks for your help, Syar.

Microsoft:
Windows 2000 Professional does not actually find some drivers with its normal plug and play process.

The following instructions are a work-around that allows Windows to recognize some drivers and not require you to continually “re-find” the new hardware every time you reboot.)
Summary:
Disable the Device in the “Found New Hardware Wizard”
or visit
Detailed:
1. In the “Welcome” screen of the “Found New Hardware Wizard”, click Next.
2. In the “Install Hardware Device Drivers” screen, select Search for a suitable driver for my device, then click Next.
3. In the “Locate Driver Files” screen, click Next. (It doesn’t matter what locations are
selected.)
4. In the “Driver Files Search Results” screen, select Disable the device, then click
Finish. (This does not actually disable the device, but does allow Windows 2000 to work with some software.)
5. Install the driver software from CD and Restart your computer.
6. In the Control Panel, open the Add/Remove Hardware wizard and click Next.
7. In the “Choose a Hardware Task” screen, select Add/Troubleshoot a device, then click Next.
8. In the “Choose a Hardware Device” screen, select Add a new device from the list and click Next.
9. In the “Find New Hardware” screen, select Yes, search for new hardware and click Next.
10. In the “Detected Hardware” screen, Windows reports that it did not find any new devices on your computer. This is correct, just click Cancel. (Windows 2000 actually does find the the device.)
11. Restart your computer.
