I have a couple computers that do nothing when you press the power button. How is the best way to test to see if it is the switch or the power supply?

I'm assuming they're atx boards? If so, find where the switch is plugged into the motherboard - it will typically be right next to the plugs for the hdd led, power led, speaker, etc. Unplug the power switch plug. Very carefully with a screwdriver touch the two pins that the power switch plug connected so that the pins are shorted. This will start up the computer on a good working machine.

If the computer starts up, the switch is bad. If not, then swap out the power supply and if that doesn't get it working, swap out the motherboard.

Hello Marcusmay,
Are these Gateways? Also, you can buy a psu tester for $20
at a pc shop. It won't test your switch though.

One is a Gateway, the other is a HP. Will it work on both?

I would do as Dakota81 suggested first. I have seen several
Gateways where the switch housing has broken. When the button is pushed the whole button mechanism is actually being pushed instead of just the plunger. So the switch plunger never makes contact. I have had luck with hot glue for this. Not sure about the HP though.

If they are both ATX form then what Dakota81 described will
work on both as well as an ATX psu tester.
