The thing is i've had nothing but problems with this computer for the past six months, it is the most basic and cheap compaq you can get. The one problem i haven't solved is my computer will wait an hour or two after i turn it on and it's almost like having a power outage, it doesn't gradually shut down, just BAM and it's off. My monitor and printer and everything else stay on, it's just the computer. This time it's been four days and it still won't let me turn it back on. Any ideas on what the problem is, and how to go about fixing it? If it were the fan not working properly, and the machine getting so hot it shut down, wouldn't i still be able to turn the computer back on once it cooled? Thanks in advance.

Sounds like your power supply is going south on you. It could also be a faulty power switch, too. I've had both problems, on different machines, in the past.

There's always a better way. The fun is trying to find it!

Dito, power supply fault.

in your run program type(msconfig) check starup and see if you have a (dumpprep) box checked in your start up programs, if so uncheck and reboot.

I encountered similar problem on one of our PCs in our Club

it shot off for no reason, and then we had to wait for 30 min or more (hour or so) to be able to get it back online (with powercable unplugged)
we figured out that with open case and a big fan blowing directly on the mobo we could extend the time it could work (sometimes in this scenario it worked just fine whole day)..
in the end it was the conclusion that something on mobo is overheating and causing the powersuply to shut off and go to one of his "security modes" and not to let pc back on for some time.
we changed the mobo and after that everything is ok now

hope you can mix something out...
