Computer name changed - SQL Desktop edition won't start

Our system administrator changed my computer name and now my SQL 7 desktop edition will not start. I'm getting a message that says: Your SQLServer installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with (unknown package id). Please rerun Setup. Is there a way to resolve this issue?

You could try:
1. Stop & Start the MSSQLServer Service under Windows Control Panel. (I dont think that will work but it wont hurt)
2. See if you can create an alias called "(local)" in the Client Network Utility.

The fix that works is to re-install SQLServer, if you have the disks. Your databases will still be there and you simply re-attach them.

All you need to do is (as the error suggests) run the SQL setup program again. It will recognise the machine name has changed, make the necessary updates and quit without affecting the existing installation at all.

Just running the SQL setup program worked like a charm and my databases showed up afterwards.
