I cannot seem to find an answer or solution to a problem that is plaguing my work computer.

Recently, the computer started to lock-up; however, the mouse never locked up. In an attempt to correct the problem, I completely reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled win98se and all of the software again. Even during this process, the computer locked up many times...but, once again, the mouse never locks up.

Can anyone help me with this problem???

Sometimes, if I wait about 15 minutes to a half hour, the computer starts from where it left off (in any given program...but when it starts up, it once again freezes!).

Once again, the computer locks up but not the mouse.

Any information to help me correct this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Doug

well can you tell us what program you are running at the time when it locks up, also a mouse seems to be a completely seperate process, which only takes up like 1-4% of the CPUs power, obviously something is workin, if it can resume after that long of a wait.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
It makes no difference what software I am running. It locks up in any particular application that I may be running at the time.

Well then its a Background software, and it does matter, you perhaps have something thats running in the background, run msconfig, goto the last tab, where you'll see everything that starts up when you boot up the computer, and remove any unnessary applications.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
Is there usually a consistent time period in between OS boot and system lock up?
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=] :: imotic :: website :: [
"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
Hard drive access light on?
Ed Fair

might be an interupt clash . boot up in safe mode press F8 while Win98 fires up. goto settings- control panel - system - device manager. See if yellow ! on any devices shown in device manager . Click on properties while on general menu item and resources used come up on screen .

Depending on the machine type, I would also go into the BIOS and disable any Power Management utilities to rule this out.
If it still does it after a fresh install I would also believe it to be along the lines of a hardware issue/driver issue.
What seems strange to me is that assuming the mouse and keyboard are both PS2, a resource conflict (on 12) should lock them both up.
If you have the patience, reinstall 98 again (yeah, I know) and test the system bare and after installing specific drivers and apps. This might help corner the culprit.

Al
atc-computing@home.com
