Hi,

I have a small home network.
XP SP2 on Server.
XP SP2 on Client1.
WIN98 SE on Client2

I normally get 2.8 to 3 MBit download speed through my cable internet service. Each client is connected to the net through my server. I notice a severe slow down and checked with the cable company.

With the Ethernet cable disconnected from my computer their tests showed the cable modem tested fine. After connecting the Ethernet cable their tests showed huge slowdown with delays of 1500 to 2000 milliseconds.

They said these results show the problem is not with their equipment or my modem but in my computer or my network. I performed several Speakeasy Speed tests ranging from 200 to 800 kbits. Way to slow. I have disconnected the network from my client with little change in speed.

The computers themselves seem to be working fine. I have no idea what to test or what to test for. Anyone have any ideas what I can test for and how to do it?

Thanks in advance.

Jeff

I would have a look to see if you have any spyware\trojans or virus' on them if I were you.

Generally speaking the net slows down on a home network because one or more machines is infected with some kind of malware, this can be the above mentioned programs or even Zombies (this allows for distributed denial of service attacks).

Go to places like to download spyware detection and cleaning program or symantecs website to do an online virus and security check.

I would also look to see if you can find out which machine in particular it does it with.

thanks,

Bazooka and Spy-bot both report no spyware or viruses present on all computers. Norton Antivirus with the latest virus updates also reports no viruses.

See if any of the tests mentioned in this thread are of use?

As you have three machines, you might attempt to locate the offending machine(if it is a single machine) by connecting each directly to the Modem/router and accessing the inet independantly.

If each accesses correctly at speed when connected independantly, you might look at your "gateway" configruation.
