Hello. I have a computer that runs an old version of a medical software database that is DOS based. The computer runs Win98SE. Suddenly, a secretary reports that the computer boots into this software without ever going to the Windows 98 GUI. If you exit the software, it reboots the computer and comes right back to the medical DOS software. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to stop this behavior? it is not connected to the internet and is a completely standalone machine (no networking at all). I am sure that a secretary probably did something, but I can't figure out what. Any help is appreciated. Dave

Boot into safe mode and check out the win.ini file by going to START/RUN type in sysedit click OK and then click on the tab with the win.ini file. It probably says load= or run= that DOS program....just leave the words load= or run= and delete whatever wording is after it

or....

When you are in safemode check out the Startup folder under START/All Programs/Startup and delete the DOS program if its there.

Hope it works for you,

Lori

Thanks Lori. I will give it a try. Dave

Look in the autoexec.bat file to see if there is an entry which will load this software.

Also look in msdos.sys file (its just text) to see if there's an entry:-

BootGUI=0 (this prevents windows GUI starting automatically).

PS - How PC expert is the secretary - causing this sort of change by accident is difficult!
