Hi,
I'm almost done building my first computer, have everything hooked up cdrom, cdrw, dvd, floopy, hard drive, memory. My ? is as I've been teaching myself. I have 2 seperate wires coming out of the computer case that's attached in the front of the computer. On each wire which is black which says GRN 1, red says VCC 1,green says DATA 1 and the yellow says DATA 1 On the other wires they say the same except they all say DATA 2 but the same words. I know I must sound really dumb but can somebody tell me where these might plug into? The motherboard is a ASUS A7N8X

Hi cantgiveup
The wires are connected to USB ports mounted on the case and most later MB's have pins for connecting external USB ports. Your MB manual should identify any connections on the board. The pins are normally a double row of 10 pins, 5 on each side. Some boards have one pin missing. Data 1 and Data 2 indicates two separate ports Since there are two Data 1's and 2"s, one is Data "in" and the other is Data "out" in each case. The color of the wire identifies whether it is "in" or "out". There isn't a standard for the data wire colors. The red wire is voltage and the black one is the ground. Hope this helps a little.

The cases I've gotten lately with front-mounted USB ports have included a chart with connections listed for many motherboards.

Colour code on these front panel USB connectors is NEARLY always.

RED: VCC
White: Data -
Green: Data +
Black: ground

You have 2 sets (all the number 1 wires and all the number 2 wires)
So all the number one connectors go on one row of pins all the number 2's on another.

As USB is a LIVE powered port it is extremely important that you fit these connectors correctly, failure to do so will nearly always burn out the USB on the motherboard.
Check the manual for correct orientation.

Thanks so much for the info. It is so nice to know I have people I can ask dumb ?'s on my part and know I won't be laughed at :))))

There's not many 'dumb' questions but the one that comes to mind is when one person picks up an unopened letter and asks a second person what's in it, as if the second is clairvoyent.
