Computer Access to Network 1

I have a computer that appears to be on the network but any attempt to connect to it fails. The computer is at a remote site and uses a different subnet but does not have its own domain controller. Other machines at the remote site are fine. I can ping the computer and a user can log onto the network from this machine and can even open Outlook/Exchange (without being prompted for userID/Password). But the user cannot browse the network nor can I browse to the computer.

since I cannot attach remotely I have to wait for the user to return. I did happen to just notice something else...neither the computer nor the user on the computer is listed in WINS. The user has restarted the machine at least a couple of times today including shutting all the way down. I'm sure this is the root cause. Any idea what would cause a computer to stop registering with WINS?

well, assuming that the NIC's IP entries are the same as the other unaffected workstations, check to make sure File and Print Services is installed, and also make the Netlogon service is running.

Also, ipconfig /all and see if anything stands out. Make sure you have wins listed in his IP settings. Also look for bad/outdated hosts and lmhost files. Hosts is the first place a pc looks. Have the user download tightvnc so you can tunnel into that pc and look at it yourself. (Just remember, tightvnc sends info in plain text and should only be used if the pc is secure.) Glen A. Johnson

step ahead of ya I've already e-mailed the tight VNC app to the user to have it installed. I'm walking them through the install now. Hopefully I can figure it out that way.
