Hi,
I am having problems opening Office XP Word and Excel (Power Point and Access are fine). When I tried to open Word, an error message popped up saying "Complie Error in hidden module: AutoExec". Likewise, when I tried to open Excel, an error message: "Compile Error in hidden module:AutoExecNew" popped up. Moreover, when I tried to quit Excel, another message saying "Compile error in hidden module:DistMon" showed up. I tried to reinstall both XP operating systems and office, but no good. Also, I tried to solve the problem by installing Office 2000 and Windows XP, but still no good. The same messages kept popping up. Could someone tell me how to fix these problems?

Many thanks

This is not an XP issue.
They probably got there with a virus or so.
You have autostart macro's in you Office folders.
Look for *.DOT and *.XLT in your Templates folders under your account name.
Also in C:\program files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Startup and XLstart.
Move them all out of there before deleting and try again The solution is out there. [morning]

Hi marcs41

Thank you very much. It worked! :) I don't know how I got these files sitting in my startup folders. I have a question to ask: what are DOT and XLT files? I looked at the file type and they seem to be word and excel templates. What do they actually do? Does that mean that we can put some files in startup folders so that these files can be triggered whenever programs are activated?

Many thanks

(T for Template)
DOT is an MS-Word Template
Short for DOcument Template

XLT is an MS-Exel Template
There is also POT (Powerpoint Template)

Any of these templates can contain Macro's just like a document.
But, if, like now, a DOT or XLT is in the pre-defined MS startup folders, they will be open upon starting Word or Excel. If they then contan a macro(virus?), it will be loaded if there is an AutoExec Macro present.
So, yes, you can put a file in your startup folder, to make it open a default template.
There is already one, normal.dot for Word. If that one gets infected or corrupt, delete it. It will always be there, Word needs it. It contains the default settings. The solution is out there. [morning]
