I'm really a novice when it comes to hardware. I need a new motherboard, but I don't know which one to buy and how to tell if it's compatible w/ my Gateway 266. I have visited some web sites thats sell, but it all looks like a foreign language to me.

Can someone point me in the right direction?

If you intend just to replace the motherboard and keep everything else ie processor, hard drive, memory, case etc
Then you just need to establish what processor you have, it's type of fit and buy a board to accomadate it!
Now if it's an upgrade path you want you may find it more economical to by an upgrade bundle, many PC suppliers put together a number of compatible parts that they discount specifically for the purpose of a reasonable upgrade.
