This is down to firmware loads , propitiatory(are really digital sets)ip phones that register to the cs1k and CM are h.323 protocols, what exactly do you need to know.
I'd look deeply into PPM and what Avaya does with it and their SIP phones - managing registrars, failing over and back to SMs, contacts, feature keys, etc. With a generic SIP device you're not getting all the wonderful goodness of each Avaya supported feature in SIP. If its a question of price, maybe look at the new e129 Grandstream/Avaya SIP phones.
