This is a old Compaq Presario 1277 laptop. The battery supplied only 5-10 minutes power at the time when the laptop worked. I have not used it for months.

Right now, with the battery inside or not, the AC light was on, but I could not start it. When the battery is inside, the battery charging light was off.

I think there is something wrong with the power supply, and other parts of the laptop work fine. But I do not know what to do next.

Any help is appreciated.

Do you have a meter to test the DC voltage at the end of the power brick (that plugs into the laptop)?

Sorry that I did not make it clear. The AC light on the computer was on. So I am sure the computer got electicity.

I'd like to know whether i can do some small fixes on it. Then I will use it only for web surfing and maybe install Linux on it.

If the power supply is the problem, can I fix it myself? I know I can do it with a desktop computer.

Seaport.

Seaport,
I think wahnula is trying to say that although the power may have been on, there may be a voltage issue with the power brick... it may be getting power, but not enough. I would try testing it with a meter to be sure it is getting the full amount of "juice".

Aripan,

Thanks. I will try it out.

To be more specific, there are three lights related to the power supply on the laptop: Power light, Batery Charging light, and AC Power plug-in light.

Whether the battery was inside or not, only AC Power Plug-in light was on. The other two lights were always off.

Did the old battery leak at all? Any residue in the battery compartment? The power circuit for a laptop is way different from a PC. The brick supplies 12-18VDC and then a series of components twists that into what you need. "No user serviceable parts inside" applies here unless you can get a disassembly manual somewhere, like Compaq, which is alluded to in this post about the same problem, but the links are dead:

Maybe you can get some info there.

Tony

Wahnula,

The link is great.

I followed the instructions but have not solve the problem yet.

Thanks anyway.
