My wife has an old Compaq Presario 4122 that came with a Quantum Bigfoot 2.55 GB hard drive. As this drive is a little slow, I wanted to put a Seagate 4.2 GB drive that I took out of my computer after upgrading to a 12.6 GB drive a few years ago. Unforunately, even though the BIOS is up to date, I can't get the computer to boot from this drive. I used the diagnostics on the Bigfoot to set the drive parameters, but it made no difference. I have returned the original drive and corrected the parameters for it, but I cannot get the computer to boot from this drive any more. I'm currently running the diagnostics (it will boot from the diagnostics partition), but don't expect to find anything. Any suggestions?

If the Seagate HD was not formatted with a clean Windows installation and its Registry contains all of the hardware data from the previous system, then you can have the problems you're experiencing.

WRT the Quantum HD, is it recognized in BIOS?
If not, make sure the cables are correctly and securely connected, and the drive is jumpered as Master.
If that's ok, make sure that the IDE-1 controller is enabled in BIOS, try a new IDE(ribbon) cable, and try a different power cable connector.
