This is odd...

My computer runs fine normally.
stats:
ATX case
Tyan Trinity 2190 MB
AMD Duron 700 mhz
512 mb matched PC133 cas2
30 GB HD 7200 rpm ata100
SB Live Value card
ATI All in wonder 128
usb modem
generic NIC
PS2 KB
USB Mouse

anyhow, all drivers are current. I thought it was a RAM issue at first, but it does it even with matched sticks for the mb. I'm starting to think it is sound related..but everything looks fine.

It doesnt lock up right away, I've played starcraft for 35 minutes and had it lock up, went for a couple hours once before it locked. I've played Winamp overnight as a jukebox for mp3s and it didnt lock up, but sometimes play for a few songs and it locks up. Sometimes instead of locking it reboots. When it locks up the sound is constant. If its in the middle of a .wav, like an explosion in starcraft, it will play the part of the sound it locks up on constantly, same for music.
I had directx 7, upgraded to 8.0a and it still does it.

I'm about to say screw it and build a new athlon, but my setup is more than adequate for surfing and starcraft/diablo2.

appreciate any assistance.

Are you sure an AMD 700mhz processor supports 512mb of RAM?
Have you tried it with just 256mb?

will try that, it feels like a memory problem.. thats why i upgraded from 256 generic to 512 matched. with the 256 of generic stuff it rebooted much more, less lockups, but reboots happenned within 5 minutes of opening winamp, and sometimes at the intro screen for games.
It seems random though, as far as when it decides to lock up.

It didnt seem to do it any more often when I had it overclocked to 770, or when it was running 819.. I'm thinking its a compatibility thing with the sound card, but I'm not buying a new sound card just to test a theory..

This stinks of either Overheating CPU or memory problems...

Even though you have got matched Memory, try borrowing a friends memory that definately works. If you still have problems, then you have at least eliminated that possibility. Also, Try One stick at a time, and try it in each slot in turn, I have seen quite a few faulty Dimm sockets in my time.

Your mobo should have a temperature sensor built in for the CPU... Check the Temp just after it has rebooted to see if it is too hot. If it is, then you need some more cooling. Durons are quite good at overheating, trust me Ive got one ;)

Failing both of those, ask the shop where you got the mobo from to swap it over, they'll try and get out of it, but just explain that you have tried everything else and you are within your rights if you bought it less than a year ago.

I actually used to be a TINY Computers Field Engineer in the UK, and the number of Faulty motherboards I came across was astounding.

Failing all that, use the tried and tested method of removing everything but HDD, Mem, CPU & GFX and put bits back in one by one till it happens again.

Hope it helps!
