We have a closed network ... not open to the internet. So I download the Common Updater from the Mcafee ftp site. This used to be just a matter of copying it from the site. But lately it has been hanging in the middle ...and is getting worse. Now I have to open folders on the site and download the contents of each one separately. A job that used to be copied in minutes, and I could walk away from it, is now taking as much as 30 minutes and I have to be there for the entire thing. Is there a link to download it automatically. Right now I am just going to :

ftp://ftp.nai.com/CommonUpdater/ and copying the files.

But I wonder if there is a link within the NAI website the way the SDATs are copied or something similar.
Thanks
Len

Have you tried using the AutoUpdate Architect to automate downloading of the DAT updates to your PC? You can schedule the download and replicate them to other repository locations if necessary.

You mentioned you are on a closed network not open to the Internet, but how are you getting the DAT updates currently? Are you downloading the files through a PC with Internet access and then manually moving it to the closed network or are you downloading it from one PC that has Internet access and that PC has access to the internal network where the other PCs don't have Internet access.

If only one PC has Internet access and all other PCs on your closed network has access to that one PC, AutoUpdate Architect can be used to do the DAT pulls for you.

in order to ensure total network integrity. WE have NO connection to the internet. The "powers the be" have the attitude rightfully so that if you aren't connected to the outside ...the outside can't get in.
So I have to manually move the dat files to the network. My problem is on the internet network (we have a separate network for each) When I try to download the FTP files from the Mcafee ftp site... it hangs constantly. I end up having to go in and d/l sometimes one file at a time, within each folder.
Will the AutoUpdate Architect ...leave me a folder that I can transfer over to the "internal" network?

The AutoUpdate Architect will download the DAT updates to the folder you designate and then you can copy that entire folder over to your "internal" network. I think you can choose between downloading from their HTTP site and fallback on the FTP site if the first site is down. I think new McAfee software are set to go to HTTP before FTP now for their DATs.

In theory it should work since you probably share out that folder internally and the clients are only looking for the files and structure that is in the designated share.

Give it a try and hopefully this solves your problem.

OK I got the Autoupdate Architect but where do I point it to download the dats. When I point it to the same place I was manually downloading them it won't go. Is there another site I am supposed to be using or is there an easier site like an http site?
Thanks again

Ok, I'm trying to recall from memory how to use AutoUpdate Architect (Haven't used it for a while now since we now use the built-in version within ePO) Hopefully I didn't misunderstand your response so I'll do a quick walkthrough of how I set up AutoUpdate Architect many months ago and see if you are missing any steps or if I totally misunderstood your response.

What I did was create a folder on my server and then shared it out and applied the appropriate read/write access credentials to it. (Eg. \\SERVER\MCAFEE)

You then need to create a repository from with AutoUpdate Architect...I believe a Master Repository. You will select UNC. Select Next and then enter the UNC path as \\SERVER\MCAFEE (or whatever your share name is) Select Next again. Enter credentials info with access to that share and file/folder permissions. Repeat for replication credentials. Then Next and Finish to complete.

I think if you look, there should be a Source and Fallback Repository and they should both be prepopulated with the configuration for the McAfee FTP and HTTP sites. (Do not change them because they may not work if you modify them and then try to recreate the settings again.)

These are my settings for the Source/Fallback sites that shows up in my ePO...not sure if they are the same in AutoUpdate Architect:

FTP://ftp.nai.com/CommonUpdater (use anonymous logon...field prefilled)

(No credentials provided.)

Now that the Master Repository has been created and you have the existing Source and Fallback Repositories, you can now create Tasks to Pull DATs. When asked which Source Repository to pull from, select NAIHTTP and schedule the date and time accordingly.

Good luck!
