comments in HTML code

I need to know how and where to enter comments into HTML code. I have to describe what the code is doing in a comment IN the code. Could someone tell me the correct syntax to use?!?!

Comments can be inserted anywhere you like, but the usual method is to place them just before or after the block of code that you are commenting on.

The format for a comments in HTML is:

<!-- comment text here -->
