This sounds dumb but I am new to sql. What tool do I start up so I can enter sp_ commands?
 

Which version of SQL Server are you running? Have you installed the client tools on the server or PC where you want to work? SQL Server has a client tool called Query Analyzer. It also has other tools such as Enterprise Manager and Osql. I suggest some reading in the Online Documentation or SQL Books Online (BOL). Terry L. Broadbent
