Im going to be dialing into a lot "far away" definity systems. I need to find out if there is a slot open that could be used to put a ds1 card in. Whats the best way to find this out remotely? Im not sure if a list config all will tell me what I need to know...What do you think? What command would you use? How would you do this?

Cheers,
Dre

Unfortunately, there are only a few ways to assume that a slot is empty:

Use the 'list configuration all' command and look for non-sequential slots.

Use 'change circuit-pack' to se what the system shows. Using this command be careful. An SCC cabinet will show slots 1 through 20 even though there are only 18 slots in the cabinet.

Use the hardware manager in ASA. It gives you a graphical illustration of the cabinet.

SCC = Single Carrier Cabinet
MCC = Multi Carrier Cabinet

An SCC, when used as an EPN (Expansion Port Network) will have only 18 closts, as there are two slots reserved for the EI and TD cards.

In an MCC, carriers B-E have 20 slots and A has 7 slots available. The A carrier is limited, as it contains the EI, Processor, and lots of other goodies.

As to finding out the free slots, the only that is tried and true is by issuing the command: list configuration all and trying to determine where a number is skipped. Be fore-warned that this may simply be a circuit pack that is having a problem, and not a free slot.

One other thing to note is DPNSS Interface Cards do not show up on the above commands only a physical inspection can confirm.

If the install was done well they might have an empty slot showing between the DS1 cards.

I have had first hand occurance of this.

Good Luck

Dave

Thanks Dave,

But can you tell what kind of cards DPNSS interface cards are please?

saphiamond,

afaik dpnss is a commonly used pstn access protocol in united kingdom, it is not used anywhere else in the world. if you're not in uk, you may as well forget about it.

I would use the "list con all" command and make a notebook, folder, whatever for all you are going to be dialing into. If you need to look into a carrier then "li con carr ??" will save you some time. This will give you something with all the different logins and passwords. The INADS numbers, I would also list the circuit ID's for the DS1's and match them the the shelf, slot, port in the switch. Mabie start off by making a cover that list all the above and the version of software. It will save you a lot of time in the end.

Thank you, everyone, for all your help!
