You need to select a post script or virtual post script printer i.e. acrobat distiller.

You'll also need a PPD. When you open the Separation Setup dialog, click the Open PPD button. If you have one for your printer, locate it here, otherwise navigate to Illustrator folder, then go to Utilities > Sample PPDs, and select General.

Ha Ha I finally got separation setup open but am having trouble printing the separations. when I set up the ppd I had to use generic for the printer. Is there a way to set it up to print to my printer. I have a Hp psc 1210, not a great printer but I just want to check out the separations. Thamks, very helpful.

Is your printer postscript? If not you will have to create PDFs of the AI separations and then print them. (I *think* this is how it works).
