I am looking for suggestions on a hosting provider for my cold fusion application. I originally registered with a provider only to find out they restrict certain functions and do not allow custom tags.

It also seems like a lot of providers do this unless you go with a dedicated server which is lot more money and I would also need to have my own Cold Fusion license which I do not have. I have had the benefit of developing this application at work, but I now need a place to host it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You will always come across limitations on the tags in shared hosting, it's part of the territory. You are sharing the server with x other users and security needs to be taken into account.

Leaving all tags available means the host obviously doesn't care about security or they just have no idea how to administer Coldfusion. Restricting too many tags is normally a sign that the host is running Coldfusion Standard version rather than Enterprise.

It would be better if you provided your requirements here. What tags do you need that you have found to be disabled? What version of Coldfusion are you looking for? Space/Bandwidth? Budget?

Hope this helps

I use hostmysite.com. Their customer support is pretty good, and I haven't had trouble with using custom tags (in shared plans). I've also heard a lot of good things about Crystal Tech, but never used it.

I use frontserve, and their quite good. Also, if you need access to any custom tags you just tell them and set you right up.

Hi Wullie,
Would you mind explaining how custom tags could have security implications in shared hosting? I'm curious.

Thanks for the info. I will need to sit down and look at my requirements before choosing a new hosting provider.

I originally signed up with GoDaddy and I can tell you that I am not impressed at all. I was using something extremely basic and it did not work. Basically, I used a login.cfm page along with application.cfm so people would have to log in to have access to a directory. After talking with GoDaddy, this is the explanation I got as to why my script did not work.

Code:
You have requested a page with the name application.cfm. This file name is reserved by the ColdFusion engine for the specification of application level settings and therefore cannot be directly requested from a web client.[\code]

crystaltech is great. no complaints at all. quick service, good prices, actually great prices for all the bandwidth and db space you get.

scottew, application.cfm (or application.cfc) is a file that coldfusion server uses to load any pre-setting for the application session.

In a typical application.cfm file you would define the application scope, define database vars, and database inserts. But you can't call that file inside any other pages. Application.cfm is also a file that gets run first, before any other files or code can get executed. At the same time, you can't name another file 'application.cfm' cause that file name has a specific meaning to the server. Just like you can't call a variable in coldfusion by a restricted word, same theory applies here.
