CNAME Problem (Trying to create Intranet)

I am trying to create an Intranet using our server. We are running W2K and IIS.

I can type the following and get a web page to come up in my browser:

http://servername/index.html.

I would like to be able to access this web site using the following syntax:

http://www.companyinitials.com/index.html

or preferably:

http://www.compnayinitials.com.

I have tried to create an alias(cname) and also a host in DNS but to no avail.

Any suggestions or further questions would be appreciated.

We use Sharepoint portal server, for which internal access is different from external access, much like how you mentioned. I added an entry into my host file that maps my desired URL to the external IP. The sysadmin who was dealing with this apparently didn't have a DNS solution. Hope this helps in any way!

CNAME (alias) if it is added properly it is a must to work!!
So, just create a CNAMe for teh server that you want, with the value "

http://www".

A second methos is to force any http service to a web server. Create a SRV record, and make it to point for the service that you were choosing to the desired server.

Are just a DNS settings. Easy ones. Is impossible to not work! Gia Betiu

Placement of the cname is important. If your domain is mycomanyinitials.com then place a cname for

http://www pointing

to the ip address of your webserver in the mycompanyinitials.com zone in dns. If your domain name is something else, you need to place the cname higher up, like in the root zone of your dns server.
