Hi,

has anyone expir. about cloning perormance by reading from an EMC DL700 (Virtual Tape Libary) and writign to a Adic Scalar i2000 with LTP-3 Drives ?

Wehn we clone from LTO-3 to LTO3 (ADIC to ADIC) we get 60MB/sec (maximum of LTO-3) but when we clone from DL700 to Adic, we got only an average of 25mb/sec ?

Andreas, Germany

How are the libraries linked? Could it ne a network card or scsi/fibre controller bottleneck?

Each of the 4 Adic LTO 3 Drives have one dedicated Ql2342 Port direct connected without switch.

In the DL we configured 20 Virtual Tape Drives.
For 5 of this virtual tape drives, we have one dedicated Emulex LP10000exDC Port gone over Cisco MDS9506 in the Legato Networker.

All Adapters are on own BUS Slots in a Dell 6850 Server

We did the same Test today with a SUN V240 compared to our Windows 2203 on Dell 6850 and the performance there is 68MB/sec (sun to DL700) compre to Windows (28MB/sec)

could it be the firmware/driver revision of your card? how is the performance to backup/restore to the EMC DL700?

Cheers.

"Avoid virus, boil your PC 1 min. before use it

Firmware and driver cant be the problem, because when i use the HP Tapedrive Test Tool on the Windows Host, i got 110MB/sec (can see that in the clariion analyser below the dl) but from Networker no more then 28MB/sec is possible to read or write from the DL700

what is your target sessions per tape drive? could it be a multiplexing problem?

"Avoid virus, boil your PC 1 min. before use it

this is absolutly equal..we do test backups with bigasm directive so only one session, one stream

Windows Host: 28MB/sec
Solaris Host 68 MB/sec
HPtapetesttool on Windows 110MB/sec

We did also a test from the windoes host over the same Adapters/SAN to a CX700 where we configured also 5*320Gb Drives as RAID 3 (same config as the DL700 has as base) and did a adv. Filetype Backup: 70MB/sec

hmm.. I don't know what to say... everything look good. Do you have any input from EMC?

A case with EMC and with EMC/legato is open since weeks, engeneering is involved...no real idea.

After the sucessfull test today with the sun, we will swap to Solaris and SPARC Hardware, if the can not fix it till end of Week/beginning next week.

Solaris is not new for us, we are one of the few EMC EDM (Enterprise Data Manager) Customers and have this since 5 Years based on Solaris and also our ACSLS Server for the STK Powderhorn was on Solaris

Andreas

well, at least you have an option, and I trust in SUN (unix) more than windows!!

Cheers.
(BTW: why the start?)

Hi,
even if You switched to Sun Solaris (congratulation;-) Did You check the configured Block-Size on the windows-environment? Could be an issue.
