Hi,

This might not be the best forum (perhaps the XP one would be better), but gotta start somewhere...

I've got a Clipper app, which works fine in DOS boxes on 95/98 & Me - but in XP it runs really slowly. It has a output to Lincolns PCL viewer which runs really quickly.. so I'm pretty sure it's something to do with the DOS box.

Any clues?

TIA
Griff

Hi, someone recalled in this forum, that Clipper'apps will run smooth in win2000 and XP, so far you DO NOT overlay the source code, that is: no more .clp and .rmk files in your .exe creation process. Also seems that Blinker 6.0 is the linker to use in those environments. I really diden't experienced that in win2000 and xp. So, y tell you what I've read.
see you !!

GAstrada,

Thank you, I'll see if a copy of Blinker 6 is available.
Unfortunately I need to overlay files for the older operating systems - this app runs on about 100 machines
belonging to a client, and they have varying pedigrees!

best regards

Griff,

"Clipper Programme Running Slowly in XP"

Well, what does not do it ? ;-)

We had some Clipper 5.2 applications running on XP but the problem was around the memory that XP leaves for DOS programs. It was not enough to run heavy programs. something identical happens on ME. Fortunately there's a patch for ME which lets you to configure the DOS memory. We have too large programs which could not be compiled without overlays. Really I don't think that the overlays are the bad boys. So we had to reinstall W98 instead, no problem.

Are your exe's local or do they run from the network? We have some problems with customers using 2000 and XP where it runs very slow on the network.

We think it has something to do with 2000/XP security checking taking a long time, but we have not solved the problem yet.

However, when I have the data and exe on my local computer(2000) it runs like a champ.

Jalm & Kris,

Thank you for your thoughts, the app and data are both local - if the data is held on an NT/2K server it is noticeably slower (but I would expect that).

I think it is just Microsoft trying to kill off all the old DOS apps!

Thanks again

I have a big application running on more than 300 machines.
No matter what version of Win you are using, usually the problem is the type of Extended/Expanded memory you are using.
Clipper wants to use EMS memory rather then XMS. So try to configure your 98/ME/XP etc. to have EMS available.
There is a trick to make this on XP, but I don't remember what is it. My support personnel is out now.

Hi,
By default clipper does not release CPU time while idle which means that each app will at all times run at 100% utilization.
To improve this situation send me an email, and i send back t you the possibles solutions.
