I'm finally getting around to addressing the spam issue at work. I am running Exchange 5.5 and Outlook for clients. What are your opinions on whether i should be looking at a client or server based spam blocker system. And what are your suggestions on products available. TIA.

I suggest getting a spam-blocking appliance. There are a number of products based on spamassassin that you can pretty much just drop in between your internet connection and exchange server. Many also ofter virus filtering. This is a good config because it takes the spam/virus scanning overhead off your exchange server so it can focus on doing it's job.

We use Double-check for our filter, and I highly recommend it. Excellent filtering, and very reasonably priced.

We use XWall (server based). It uses very few resources, installs easily, configures easily. It also has a Bayesian filter. Excellent tech support for it. In the three months since we installed it our public email address has gone from 120 spam per day down to 2 or 3 a day.

When Sobig.F attacked it only took us 2 minutes to configure XWall to block not only original Sobig.F emails but also the NDR's. It can also be set to strip the delivery and read flags of any spam that still manages to get through so that receipts don't get sent back to the spammers.

It has a one time cost of under $400 US.
