I am trying to delete some old users from Exchange, and am having a problem. The Purge option is greyed out when I right click on a user's mailbox in System Manager. I then right click on "Mailboxes" and click "Run Cleanup Agent." The screen refreshes, but nothing happens.

Usually the mailboxes of people who's user account in AD has been deleted become red, and I am allows to purge them. But nothing happens when I run the Cleanup Agent this time. I still cannot remove the old users.

Please help me.

Thanks in advance.

When you deleted the user accounts in AD, did you check the option to delete their Exchange mailbox as well?

How long between deleting the users from AD and trying to purge their mailbox?

I deleted them at about 9am cst this morning... so its been 4 or 5 hours...

whenever I delete an account from AD, I generall have to wait until the following day before I can purge the mailbox. This will generally put a fail message on tape backups if this is what you run, but it is a nice reminder to go and purge.

You can also, depending upon the size of your setup, force your Recipient Update Policy to run...wait about fifteen minutes, then try the cleanup agent again. I have about 250 users and the update takes a few minutes, then the deleted box will show up to purge.

Thanks guys, for the help. I found the problem had to do with my PDC's not propagating Active Directory. Changes made on one, did not affect the other. So for whatever reason, though I had deleted users on one, the other still had them and that is why they were not purgable after running Cleanup Agent. The same was true on why I couldn't add new mailboxes either (found this out later)... Once I got the PDC's propagating again (reboots), all was good.

Thanks again.
