what solvent should I be using to clean off a thermal tape? (I've heard that a alcohol based solution of some sort, and failing that does turpentine to the trick?)

also, what's the usual procedure to do this?

Thanks

Isopropyl alcohol 97 to 99 percent. I wouldn't use terp as it will leave a residue.

I've heard that nail varnish remover is good, is that true?

I dont know about the nail polish remover but the isoproply 97 to 99% is your best best as you can get it at the $1 store!

For what it's worth, I just used Artic Silver products with great success. The instructions on their web site are very helpful and highly recommended.

Sometimes i read and dont even remember what i read, lol. I was thinking of thermal paste but the original question was how to get rid of thermal tape (thermal pad).
I use an old or expired credit card or anything similar to get most of it off. Then I use the alcohol. With a very stubborn one i use acetone or other oil based cleaner, but i cant remember doing that in a long time, usually the credit card and alcohol will work.

Another small hint for applying thermal paste. I took a few old playing cards and cut them into thin pieces. The pieces are different sizes for different jobs. For a cpu i use a thin piece, makes it easy to put a thin film on the cpu even when its in the case. I find with the different size pieces i have cut up i dont need any other applicators and the price was right too!

Outdoors, a small amount of lighter fuel or petrol works really well. Make sure to take all obvious precautions!

I do not exagerate when I say this stuff is brilliant!
I was sceptical before we bought some in but now I am nothing short of amazed by how well it works.
And yes! we have tried all sorts.
