I have a desktop system with WinME on it and plan to do a clean install of XP Pro. I want to to be sure there are no remnants of WinME left on it!!

My question is WHEN to reformat the hard drive to do this. Should I reformat the HD before popping the install CD in? Or (as I've seen some tips pages say...) will XP setup give me the opportunity to do the re-format as part of the setup process? I just want to be sure to do so at the proper time and be sure it is done correctly --- so, in fact, I do obtain a clean install.

BTW, it's a 60 GB HD, so I plan to format it as NTFS.

Many thanks in advance!!

Bob

If you boot from XP install CD and select new install, you will get opportunity to remove existing ME partition and create/format new ntfs one for XP. This will wipe ME out.

Many thanks for clearing that up, wolluf!! I will be doing the install in the next day or so --- will let you know how it goes.

Clean install seems to have gone well. Did "quick" format on drive. OS install took just under an hour. It found all hardware except for sound card, but was able to get an XP driver for it from mfr web site.

So far I really like XP!!! I think I'll really enjoy it & it will be good in my development work.

Many thanks for your tip, wolluf --- worked like a charm!!

Regards --- Bob
