Windows Server 2000 SP4, patched, 2 gigs ram, dual cpu...
Citrix Metaframe v1.80 build 260 Service Pack 2
Users are connecting to the terminal server via Citrix.
After logging in user is presented with the following errors:

Title bar: User Environment
Message: Windows cannot load your profile. Please increase the registry size and restart the computer.

Clicking OK yields:

Title bar: User Environment
Message: Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.
DETAIL-Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service.

Application log on the server has several userenv events:

System log has an event that I suspect is related:
2020,ERROR,Srv,Mon Jul 12 17:17:16 2004,No User,The server was unable to allocate from the system paged pool because the pool was empty.

Some users are not connecting at all.

Some users don't get his immediately after a reboot, but subsequently the issue reappears.

I call upon the great and wise contributors of Tek-Tips to help. Thanks in advance...

Hi,

Try configuring the Windows 2000 Server (Citrix) so that it's registry is set at 120Mb.

To do this:-

Right Click My computer
Properties
Advanced Tab
Performance Button
Change Button

Set the Registry size at the bottom
Click OK
Click OK

Your server will need a reboot to make these changes.

Try again and report back!

Cheers,
Carl.

Set Maximum Reigistry Size to 120MB, restarted. I was able to log in several times over the course of an hour iwthout issue. I could see 1-2 others were logged in via TS MGR. After that I tried to log in and got the same scenario as above. This appears to be the modus operandi: It works a little for a little while then needs a reboot. Gladly accepting more feedback on this as this is my most vocal office!

I'd set a static page file size (preferably on a different partition), if already static then just up it's size.

We had this same issue in our environment last week and beginning of this week. I found a registry entry that fixed the issue.
Add this to the registry:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Managment
Add this reg_dword: "PoolUsageMaximum" and make the value to 40 in Decimal.

Also modify the PagedPoolSize to FFFFFFFF in Hex.

This fixed our issue.
Hope this helps.

enigma99, thanks for the info, what source did you use for that information?

I think I actually got it by searching in Microsoft's knowledge base. I just searched for the Event ID 2020 and there it was. It has to do with the number of large files the server opens at a time. It simply runs out of memory so you just have to tweak it up.

Did that help you?

thanks.
