How can I get the IP address from mac addresses on a cisco 4006 switch ?

Assuming you know what the MAC addresses are already, go to the router which is doing the routing for the switch. This could either be an MSFC on the Supervisor card of the 4006 or an external router to the switch. When you get to the router, do a "show arp". Compare the MAC address you have with the list's output and it should tell you the corresponding IP address.

If the connection to the switch is a single subnet connections and not trunked , on the switch you can ping the broadcast address and this will populate the arp table on the switch with address , and mac address . If it'sd trunked then you have to go to the layer 3 device to look up the address to mac address correlation .

Thanks vipergg. What I'm trying to do is to document which servers are in which port of a 4006. They are all on one vlan. I have a spread sheet of IP addresses. I tried to ping the broadcast from my pc (same vlan) so I could get a list of mac to IP but it didn't change my arp cache at all ! I'll try from switch. By the way whats the difference between the sho ip arp list I tried with my non trunked ports and the ip to mac correlation you mentioned with trunked ports ?

I use a product called Solarwids switch port mapper. This maps all devices to each portof the switch it even gives name resloution on these device should you need it
