Des anyone know where one can get a software program that simulates a cisco router?<br>
I am studing for my CCNP and need to practice commands and setups on Cisco routers.<br>

I was scrolling down through the posts to see what I've missed, so this reply may not be timely for you, but may be of benefit to others. I got the CCNA router simulator from <A HREF="

and found it to be beneficial, when practicing for my CCNA exam. I used the free lab more than the built in scenarios, but either one will give you practice at entering commands at the CLI. According to their site, which I just checked this morning, the ACRC simulator will be out soon after the first of the year. Like you, I am working towards the CCNP and think the simulators are easier and cheaper than hunting down 2 or 3 used routers. They also have a liberal usage license, in that they will let you install it at work and also install a copy at home. So it is like getting two packages for the price of one. I will likely be picking up the ACRC simulator when it comes out, as I plan to take the BCRAN beta test in January, then start working on the ACRC test. Good Luck in your studies. I have used the Sybex e-trainer that comes with Todd Lammle's CCNA Book. Save yourself some money and DO NOT use e-trainer! That software is a piece of garbage, it does not even support some of the commands that it lists in the labs of its own manual!

Todd Lammle's book is the way to go though. I passed on the first attempt, with a very comfortable margin.

The RouterSim product seems like a more advanced e-trainer, but since e-trainer was such a piece of trash, I shall not buy RouterSim. I also severely dislike their authorization diskette policy (for example, they restrict you from installing the software on your home machine and your work machine.) While I am against software piracy, you should be able to install your legally purchased software as you please, so long as there is not more than one instance running at a time. I will not purchase from them just because of that.

I would offer that if you really want to learn how to make a router sit up and play, then one needs to have hands-on training with a real router, not a sim. There are differences between code levels that the sim doesnt cover, obscure commands the sim doesnt have, faulty hardware the sim doesn have and so on. They are OK to start with but I would not base my career on a simulation. Even pilots who have access to the best sims in the world still need air time and there are good reasons for that.

If you do not want to buy a couple of routers.. which honestly nowdays are pretty darn cheap compared to what you make over the course of your career.. use some of the &quot;rented&quot; time on routers.. MentorLabs has a very good program and I know of others out there.

In my *real* world, I support 5 different sites and I have IOS levels from 9.1 to 12.0.9 It tends to make life interesting and there is not any way a simulator can come close to it.

Does anyone know where I can get a version of krang? You can see a screen shot on routeru.com, and from what I can see, it looks amazing, but it doesn't look like you can get it anywhere.

The company I work for signed us up with Knowledgenet CCNA online course last year. First off, you need broadband to access these courses, its all over the web and phone (800#) and very good. In about the middle of the course, they open up a lab environment with Cisco routers and switches to work on. You can do just about anything you want with them, its really the best way you could work on these devices without actually buying them. Now, the drawback is I heard it costs somewhere between $1000 and $3000 for this class.
