Hi,

We are in the process of obtaining a cisco pix 515 for our head office. Sooner or later we want to VPN into our other offices via the internet.

Question 1. Do I need to use the CISCO VPN client to use the VPN or can I use any VPN client. (how is this done)

Question 2. We have a wireless connection between our head office and another office 3 KM away. this is using 48BIT encryption which is not adequate. what would be the best way to secure the traffic between these two locations.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Question 1. You can terminate a VPN starting at a PIX with many Cisco hardware devices, as well as software clients. I don't know of anyone using a 3rd party solution to terminate it.

Question 2. Not to be a wise-ass, but the best way would be with a frame line.

Company bought wireless solution before i joined. Now they have tried but can't return the hardware so they're stuck

Any suggestions over tightning security over a 48bit wireless link??

HI.

Since this is a pix forum, I'll refer to a pix solution.

Connect the wireless router to a dedicated pix interface.
Purchase another pix for the other side.
Purchase 3DES license if needed, or if DES is enough (since the wireless devices also encrypt) then you can use it.
Create a VPN or instead configure IPSec in transport mode to encrypt the traffic between sites.

You can also do it with other devices using either IPSec or propriety solutions. Make sure that the devices you plan to use support encryption at the level and speed that is required.
