Hi,

We have just bought a Cisco PIX 501 firewall, and I've been tasked with getting it working, unfortunately I have never encountered firewalls before. I managed to set the internal and external IP addresses but that was about it, what else do I need to do?

Any help would be much appreciated.

HI.

What about planning. Even for a small netwrok you'll need to plan the TCP/IP addressing and other related aspects of your network.
Have you done that?
Do you have a bunch of registered ip addresses for the outside network, or only a single one connected to a DSL or similar device?
Do you have internal servers to be accessed from outside?

You'll need to read some, to understand the logic of the pix.
Use the manuals that came with the pix, and here are some additional links:

Now, a GUI interface can help newbie and pro.
I suggest using pixcript for the initial config:
Then later use PDM for additional tunning and monitoring.

Hi,

Thanks for your response, we have one ip address scope which covers all of the internal network.
We have six registered ip addresses for the outside network and there aren't any internal servers that have to be accessed from outside.
Thanks also for the links, I looking at them at the moment.
