Hello we have just switched ISPs and i need to change the DNS server IP that our router currently points to, to the new one.

I do not know a thing about cisco routers we have the 1720.
our internal network has Static IPs, and the clients point to our DC (win 2000 server) for DNS resolution.. our DC forwards to our router.

I believe all i need to do is change the routers outside IP (?) and where it looks for DNS.

I have been given IPs from sprint for us to use and their DNS servers.

PLEASE LEND A HAND! THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Your Win2000 server should use your ISP's name servers, not the router! Cisco routers do not run DNS servers and so wouldn't respond to a recursive query from a server.

Thank you so much.. clearly i am not our main IT guy. We point to the router as a "Gateway" i got confused about what role that it had. I think it is our internet gateway.

So when changing ISPs I dont have to change a thing with the router? the DNS and outgoing mail server are the only things i have to adjust? No Idea what i am talking about but are there IP tables that have to be changed?

Thanks again for the info!

If you've changed ISP's then your global IP addresses will have changed so it may require firewall and router configuration changes to reflect the new addresses.

As far as DNS and mail goes, your outgoing mail server will change if you are using your ISP's mail server as a "smart host" and your proxy server should be configured with your new ISP's DNS server.

If in doubt, just ring your ISP and I'm sure that they'll be glad to help.

Chris.

If you are using DHCP on your router to autopopulate your clients with IP information (including DNS), you will have to change the name-server line within your DHCP set up on your router!
