Cisco Catalyst 3550 problem

We've recently purchase a few Catalyst 3550's to replace our existing Bay network switches. General, the switches are good apart from some problems i've experienced with them. These are:

1. We use remote deployment of operating system from a MSDOS boot with 3com 3c905 network cards. However, in DOS the 3com cards never seem to be able to communicate with switch.

2. We have some WYSE Winterms 2310SE, which only support 10Mb. Again, these seem to struggle to auto negotiate with cisco switches.

3. We have a fast ethernet convertor (Fibre to RJ45), and this also seems to struggle to work when linking a Cisco to it that communicates with a BAY switch at other end of fibre. BAY to BAY works fine.

For above, i've tried manually setting speeds/duplex, without success. Problem 3 was so frustrating, as it would work sometimes, and then just stop working with no changes.

Anyone got any solutions or faced similar problems with Cisco catalyst 3550 switches? Any help greatly appreciated :)

Try turning on portfast.

I do the following to all ports connected to devices (except other switches):

switchport mode access

Seems to clear up some issues we were having.

Tried both above suggestions, but still having the same problems.

Cisco mention about adjusting carrier-delay <time> or jitter tolerance may help problem. I'm seeing below in console when a winterm is trying to connect.

02:28:33: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface FastEthernet0/21, changed state to up
02:28:43: %LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface FastEthernet0/21, changed state to down
