Hi
Hope one of you guys is willing to help me.
I brought a 827H Router off ebay (now know this was a stupid thing to do,should have just got a new one)with the idea that it would help me learn the ios commands and how to set up routers.
Well in the last two weeks i have missed three nights sleep trying to work out what is wrong. (the wife thinks i am having an affair)
The problem is i have an autoconfigured ip address and subnet mask, and no matter what i do it always loads on boot.
I have re-set to factory defaults, deleted the flash and re-loaded,deleted the contents of nvram, webflash and when i re-boot the auto-ip address is still there.
If there is nothing that can be done i would rather know so i can just get a router off a recognised supplier.
Someone please tell me where i am going wrong, it is 01:30 in the morning and i have been here for 18 hours and i am considering throwing it out the window.

Paul

First do a show ver and lets see where it is booting from.

Should be 0x2102

I have a Cisco 831 for which the factory config was for dhcp on the lan side. Easy to fix if this is the case just console in to the router and change it from dhcp to what you need it to be.

Could be the 827h has this factory config as well.

here you go
It is not 0x2102 but when i change to 0x2102 when i reboot it comes back to the config below.
Thanks for helping.

Okay....I think you did reset it to factory default because I see no ip information static or dynamic that this router will supply. The config register is virtually the same as 0x2102 with the only real difference you will notice on your com port which 0x3922 sets it at 115200 and 0x2102 sets it to standard 9600. If you want the router to have a static lan you could do something like:

conf t
int e0
ip address 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0
ip nat inside
no shut

Remember to write your changes as you go so that you do not loose them on a router reboot.

Once this is in place change the PC settings to something like 192.168.2.2 255.255.255.0 with a gateway of 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0 and you will also need to manually set a DNS server for name resolution. 206.163.82.4 is a DNS server I know of you can use for testing but should be changed to a DNS server in your area.
You should at this point be able to ping the router ip address.

DHCP for the LAN would be easier cause you can specify gateway and DNS settings there and then will be delivered to the PC's, less maintenance.

For your DSL interface we will nned to know the type (CAP or DMT) and the authentication method (Probably PPPOA).

hi
Tried everything you suggested still showing a static ip
the speed i changed to 115200 when i was using xmodem to reinstall the flash after i deleted it.
The interesting thing now is it wont let me set it back to 0x2102 see below. Also is it not something to do with the script it runs when ever i reboot i have pasted lines below.

Thanks

Hi JOAMON,
Thanks for the help. I now have the router at 0x2102
If i could just ask another coule of things
1 If i do not want to use DHCP how do i change the router settings as you said it was pre-configured at the factory.

2 Could you tell me where i can view some basic test configs so i can have a guide to follow.

3 You say to configure adsl you will need more info i know i am using PPPoA but how do i know if i am on CAP or DMT can i tell from my current router (Netgear) or will i need to soeak to my ISP.Will you need any more info for the adsl.

Thanks again for all the help.

Who is your DSL provider? I think I can work on it tomorrow evening...just pulled a nineteen so a little out of it right now......By the way only the factory config has dhcp enabled.....your shows no signs of this but could easily be set for that if you want to make it easier for your network.

My service provider is Freedom2surf
The router has DHcp enabled by default i think.
I have started my first config for my home network would you have a look and tell me what you think.I used DHCP as you said it would be easier to manage.( Be gentle it was my first attempt)Any pointers as to what else i would need to include.

Thanks

Try the following and post results please:

Need:

Add:

ip dhcp excluded-address 10.10.10.1
access-list 102 permit 10.10.10.0 0.0.0.255 any
ip nat inside source list 102 interface ethernet0 overload
no ip http server
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 dialer1

Add new interface:

interface dialer1
ip address negotioated
ip nat outside
encapsulation PPP
dialer pool 1
ppp pap sent-username XXXXXXXX password XXXXXXXX

Modify interface ATM0

dialer pool-member 1
no shutdown
pvc 0/38 (I beleive this is the setting for freedom2surf)
encapsulation aal5mux ppp dialer

Made mistake in last post

ip nat inside source list 102 interface dialer1 overload

Sorry bout that.

I got as far as modifying ATM0 but there doesn't seem to be a command for dialer on this interface see below
Also could you look at access list 102 info is this correct as this was the only way it would let me enter it.
Thanks

That is strange that it wont let you enter the access list....
There is a - that must be list as dialer pool-member....not two words....

Remember that as you are entering commands in config mode you can start entering the first few letters and then hit the tab key and it will auto-fill the rest but will stop at a point were there may be more than one choice.

Does this look ok Thanks for the tip about Tab
thats how i worked out what was wrong

That looks pretty good. One thing I am not 100% sure are the DSL settings. There are quite a few ways these can be setup and each ISP is different. Should you have problems connecting you might contact their tech support and have them check the settings on your ATM interface and also if PAP is the correct method or do they maybe use CHAP.

Hope this was useful for you. I have an email alert if you need anything further.

Oh....one last item....

You might put the following in your router to mask passwords.....
service password-encryption
