Hello, I hope someone can help with this. we have 2 buidings that were recently connected by Free Space Optics lasers. The lasers are connected to thier respective switches in each bulding. Building 1's laser is connected to a 6509 switch running software Version NmpSW: 6.4(21) Through an optical port. Building 2's Laser is connected to a 4505 switch running software IOS Version 12.2(25). Since these buildings were connected we have been experiencing intermittent drops in connection. Both switch ports are enabled Full-duplex. The laser manufacturer has said that the drops occur on the 4505 switch. The only thing I can find during a show tech support on the 4505 switch is

Port CrcAlign-Err Dropped-Bad-Pkts Collisions Symbol-Err
Gi1/1 294 0 0 7275310

Port Undersize Oversize Fragments Jabbers
Gi1/1 4054 0 8 18

Port Single-Col Multi-Col Late-Col Excess-Col
Gi1/1 0 0 0 0

Port Deferred-Col False-Car Carri-Sen Sequence-Err
Gi1/1 0 0 0 6008107

I am not a cisco expert so I am not sure if any of these errors really tell me anything. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Here is the configuration of the port on Building 2

interface GigabitEthernet1/1
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk native vlan 200
switchport mode trunk
switchport nonegotiate
speed nonegotiate

Building 1's port config is

#module 2 : 8-port 1000BaseX Ethernet
set vlan 4 2/3,2/7
set vlan 200 2/2,2/6
set port disable 2/1,2/8

Port Name Status Vlan Duplex Speed Type
----- -------------------- ---------- ---------- ------
2/2 connected trunk full 1000 1000BaseSX

If you see it only on one side then it is either a problem with the transmit side of the laser on the 6509 or you have a fiber strand problem on the transmit side going to the 4505. The 4505 is just reporting the errors doesn't mean it is the cause . Improperly terminated fiber or a weak laser on the transmit side will usually cause symptoms like this . Anyway you look at it you will need to have someone come in and take some light levels on the ckt. to see where the problem is .

You can look at sh int for each of those interfaces, and as viper has said, if you see errors like excessive collisions only on one side, then it is likely a fiber problem (clean the ends, replace the cable, etc).

Thank you for the responses. I looked for errors on the other side and only found this error.

Port Align-Err FCS-Err Xmit-Err Rcv-Err UnderSize
----- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------- ---------
2/2 0 81 0 0 0

Does this still mean there is a problem with the fiber?

Most likely or you are trying to push the SX gbics to far a distance , those are all things that should be looked at .
