Hello,

I have in my company a network structure running both Token Ring and Fast Ethernet through a Router Cisco 3640. We have installed in this router a Token Ring card and a Fast Ethernet card (routing data between both LANs). Currently we have approximately 350 users connected into the Token Ring structure, all of them access Novell applications and file server, and just a few users and server into the Fast Ethernet. We need to migrate all data from that Novell server (file server)to another NT 2000 server which will be connected primarily into the Fast Ethernet blade. We have two options to chose, I mean, we can either install a second card (Token Ring) into the NT 2000 Server or let the traffic flows through the router (~350 users). There are some reluctance concerning the first options due to the enterprise standards, but in the other hand we are not sure if the Cisco router (3640) will be able to handle that possible amount of data traffic thought it. That router also handle voice over Frame Reay (There is an E1 card connecting the router to a PBX). Could someone comment those options, mainly regarding to the router capabilities for handling the data traffic?

The 3640 should be able to handle it, depending on your configuration, ACL's, etc. Anything that would cause the router to do process switching. See below:

Platform Fast Switching PPS Process Switching PPS
3640 100MHz RISC 50-70kpps 3-4kpps

See the difference, that is in PPS (packets per second), NOT Kbytes.

HTH
