We have a Cisco 3524 switch. We are getting a new time clock that will connect over an ethernet connection. The specifications say the port speed on the switch must be set to 10 MBps for the timeclock.

Is the "rate-limit" command used to set that? Or, is there a specific command to set the port to 10 MBps?

Thanks,
Alice
(Obviously not cisco certified!)

All the 10/100 Ethernet ports by default on a 3534XL are set to Auto-Negotiate the Speed and Duplex. So unless you have hard-coded the ports previously just plug it in.

Andy,

I think the problem lies in the time clock not being able to auto-negotiate the speed. The time clock documentation says in big bold letters that the port on any 10/100 switch must be set to 10 MBps speed on the port that the time clock will use.

I'm searching the Cisco documentation. It is a lot of information to sift through. If I just knew what command to search for, it would help.

Thanks for your reply, Alice

Conf t , inter Fx/x , enter . Speed 10,enter. Duplex half, enter . End , write memory , this should do it .

If your device only runs at 10Mbps then the switch will detect this and switch the interface to 10Mbps/Half Duplex (assuming the clock doesn't negotiate duplex?). You can force it like vipergg says, but my guess is if you plug it in it will work without you touching the switch configuration.

interface fastethernet0/x
speed 10
duplex half

ADB100 is correct if the port is set as auto it can always sense speed but cannot sense duplex without the other end being set to auto so it always defaults to half duplex so it should work as auto also .
