Hi.
I'm trying to connect a Cisco 2950 switch to a Cisco 2940-8TF switch, but are not able to get the two to communicate properly.
The connection is via fiber and with GBIC-interfaces at both ends.
When I connetc the two switches, they discover each other via CDP. a "show cdp neighbor" on one switch shows the other switch in the list.
But ping etc does not succeed. Both IP-address and mask is sett correct.
I heard somewere that the 2940 doesn't support as many VLAN's as the 2950, can this stop them from communicating.
We have configured the same VLAN's on both switches.

Any suggestions?

Thanks :-)

Did U use VTP at all? I ran into a similar problem where the vtp server and client both had the same domain but couldn't ping each other. The difference was the client was set to an all UPPERCASE domain while the server was lowercase. That made all the difference once i changed both to lowercase I could ping away.
(If you havn't used vtp you may want to consider it since its all cisco equipment.)

Also depending on your VLAN setup it may be a trunking problem. You may want to post your configs.

OK, problem is that I dont have access to both switches.
We supplied the 2940-switch to an existing LAN run by someone else, so the 2950-switch I don't have the config for.
I just got the config for the 2940 from the guys that run the rest of the switches on the LAN.
They had a ready config for the switches that I just pasted into the 2940. They said it was the same as they used on the rest of the switches, just with a different IP-addres.
So VTP, VLAN etc should be the same.
They told me that the 2940 had some limitations that prevented it from working with a 2950-switch.
I find this verry strange, just wondering if this can be true...
A new Cisco-switch not being able to talk to another.
Can anyone help me out on this? Please.... :-)

I don't see why they shouldn't be able to talk to each other. Are the switches in their own vlan? Or are they just using vlan1?
Without a config or being able to test the switches in person its going to be hard for you to diagnose.
The only other thing I can think of is having to upgrade the ios image on the 2940.
The release notes for the 2940 don't mention anything about the two not being able to work with each other.

Only thing I know is that they don't use VLAN 1 they use VLAN 100 for management, and two other VLAN's for the users.
I'm sort of looking for a clear yes or no answer like :
Yes, these to switches (given the right config/IOS-image) can work together, or
No, these to cannot (for reason "xxxxxxxx") work together whatever you do.
The 2940 is brand new from Cisco and the 2950 is 1,5 year old, so the IOS of the 2940 shouldn't be to old do you think?
Maby someone who has used (or tested) a setup like this and reads this post could be kind to respond.

Thank's again.

They should work together without a problem , without seeing the configs we are kind of shooting in the breeze . Are you trunking between them ? If so clear all vlans except the ones you need on each side just in case there is a vlan limitation on the 2940 , we have a 2940 hung off 2950 and 4506's without a problem , I think this is strictly a config problem . Verify trunking by doing a show int trunk on both sides , verify all your vlans are active that you need by doing a show vlan on both sides .
