I don't have the admin password to several of the switches that we use on our LAN. I'm building a framework and trying to find out what IP goes with what switch. Does anyone know of a way that I could plug a laptop or Pocket PC into each switch to find out what IP it's using? Is there an easy way to find out what IP address a switch is using? Thanks!

"show ip interface vlan 1" from the console port.

Don't you need need a password to get to that?

Normally you don't set a password on the console, unless your scared of somone physically getting into the switch.

Thanks for the help baddos. Our switch admin is out of town for the next week and he does put passwords on the switches. I just tried it. I was hoping that I could find an app kind of did a tracert or something that would display my machine --> switch --> gateway.

If you have access to the switch you can perform a password recovery on the switch. This wont alter the config, but will enable you to change the passwords you need to (con 0, vty 0 4, enable/enable secret.

Mail me if you want the procedure.

Life sucks, just dont swallow it!!

if you have a switch connected to it that you can log into, try > sho cdp neighbor detail.
This will tell you what the ip address of the other device is and what interface you are connected to amoungst other info.
