I have two Cisco 2924 XL switches that are tied together with
a crossover cable. Both Port Status LEDs are off. According
to the hardware installation guide the off LED means "no link". What does "no link" mean? I have tried going to that interface and giving command "no shut" but the LEDs stay off.
The crossover cable is good. Will STP turn the LEDs off? We had a couple of media converters fail and the redundant path should have been thru this link but it did not work. Thanks for your help. regear

You've verified that the cross-over cable is good. And you can't get the switches to communicate over that connection. Assuming that you only have that one connection between the switches...then it should work. If both interfaces are in a no shut status and are not on different vlans then you should get connectivity. I'd suggest making sure that both ports are on vlan 1 and have portfast DISABLED. This should work.

There is a mode button on the 2924's , make sure that the status light is lit up , it has to be in this mode to give you link status . If not press the mode button a couple of times until the status light comes on . Mode button is on the left side of the switch .

Vipergg is correct...forgot about the mode button.
