I recently purchased a Cisco 2502 router as a practice lab for configuration purposes and have come to a possible conclusion that my router may be defective. I have used the default parameters of:

Bit flow rate 9600
Data Bits 8
Parity 0
Stop Bits 1
Hardware flow: none

Tried it with Stop Bits as 2 and
Hardware Flow: Hardware

* Tried two different working console cables attached to my serial DB9 port ((RJ-45 adapter) to console port of 2502 router.

* Tried connecting to two working pc's.
* Using HyperTerminal as a defaut emulator.
* Cannot type in the command interface on COM1 or COM4.
* Shows a blank white screen without the router> indication or flashing underscore.
* When trying COM4 can only type the letter a in the command interface and nothing else.

Can it be possible the IOS image is not present?
When first acquiring the router I was able to configure it successfully, but wanted to configure it again because realized I needed to assign the IP address using DHCP.
Upon many tries I was only able to enter the console twice.

Does anyone have any insight to my little dilemma? Obviously I am a bonafide newbie to this and would appreciate any thoughts to this predicament.

Thanks for reading.

Do you by chance set up an ip interface that you could telnet to?

Sounds like the cosole port speed has been changed. Start at the bottom of the scale and keep changing com port speed until you find the right speed.

IOS wouldn't be the issue. It has a default it would use if yours was bad. Do you get a green light on the back "OK".

Take the cover off and reseat the RAM and FLASH, check the power supply connection also. The Fan turns on correct?

Thanks for all that replied. Stupid me. I didn't realize that you needed to hit enter before typing in a command even upon first configuring the router.

Thanks anyway.
