Just opened new 1721 router from vendor, installed crucial memory # CT8M32S4P8.4T 32mb 100 pin DIMM 8mx32 sync 8ns. Bootstrap immediately reports "C1700 platform with 32768 Kbytes of main memory" remove memory, same boot memory. Installed 32 meg from another router, same results. Tried 64 meg of similar other specifications, same results. Has anyone in this group been screwed by the third party memory before? I haven't; this is my 10th or so 17XX router build. Vendor refuses to RMA based in my telling them the above story. Has anyone found a better vendor of 3rd party memory? or a less expensive source for Cisco certified memory. Seems like everybody who is not charging $600 for 32megs has blurred the detail if theirs is or is not Cisco certified.

Hello there, can you put back the original memory the router come with, power cycle and send the router in rommon mode, in there type meminfo and post the result... I will have a look at it. Cheers!

I've had similar problems with 2600 routers where I added non-cisco memory to cisco memory and the router only saw one. If I removed the Cisco memory, the router would see the new memory fine.

In reply to Tecnikall, 1700 series has only one memory slot, so I cannot comply with your request to replace Crucial memory with original memory. However I will post meminfo from rmon....
rommon 1 > meminfo

Main memory size: 32 MB.
Available main memory starts at 0x10000, size 32704KB
IO (packet) memory size: 10 percent of main memory.
NVRAM size: 32KB

thanks!!!

Hi Carlempire, from the output of meminfor it looks like the router does recognise the Crucial memory thus you should be able to boot the router with it. Is the router coming up fine with this memory? If not, can you capture the booting process? Also, which image are you trying to boot? Maybe there is something else in there we may need to look at it....

The meminfo is from onboard memory only not with Crucial in slot. Need 64 for IOS that I need to install. I'm booting what ever crap came with it for the purposes of: testing memory (can it see it); installing wic1enet. Have not moved on to the next step. Waiting to fix this via smartnet. If that doesn't work you'll see this baby on ebay cheap.

I have put 3rd party ram and flash in a 2610, and a 2621XM, and had no problem (other them having to go in to rmon and tftp the ios back on the 2610)

The memory was "certified" for cisco router's

all fixed via smartnet, they sent one with 64dram (onboard) so we are good to go. Thanks everybody for your suggestions.
