I have IOS version 12.2(16a) and am told that it does not support WIC-1ENET card in either slot 0 or 1. I need to get IOS 12.3(1) (I think). I have never installed CISCO IOS. Where can I get this software and will it affect the fact that I currently have IP/FW/IDS/IPSEC 56K?

I just found out that I need to have a service contract with CISCO to be able to get the IOS 12.3(1). I do not have a contract. Is there any other WAN card that would be compatible with the CISCO 1720 ios 12.2(16a)?

Hmm, you were told... but did you tried yourself? Browsing Cisco.com I found this:

and anywhere on this page they are using IOS v12.2(4). Just plug it in, it can't hurt. If your IOS really does not support the card, you will see from eg. show version command.

I tried it and it was not able to recognize the WIC-1ENET. What card do I need to get to work with 12.2(16a)?

You will need a minimum of the following:

The Cisco WIC-1ENET card requires Cisco IOS Release 12.2(2)XJ or later if the card is installed in any WIC slot other than slot 0 or if more than one card is installed.

The card can be used with Cisco IOS Release 12.2(4)T, but the card must be installed in slot 0 and only one Cisco WIC-1ENET card can be installed in the router.

Unfortunately you cannot get around having an IOS that supports the card.

Is there a special model number of WIC1ENET that you can use in port 1 (the second port) The cisco web url you site leaves out how to do this, merely discussing an important difference between (I guess) WIC1enet marked "use in port zero only" or not... I've never seen one that did NOT say use only in slot 0

I was always under the impression that you cannot have two WIC1ENET in 17XX router. If this statment is wrong, it is excellent news for me!

For original poster: purchase a smartnet for the router from an online vendor, when registering it you get access to the COO and will be able to find upgraded IOS software. Select it carefully and only flash your router with the right IOS. carl.at.empiretech.net

No, you can only have one WIC-1ENET card in a 1720 or 1750.

Normally you have to put the card into slot 0 unless you are running 12.2(2)XJ.
