Cisco 1603 problem

I've just acquired a 1603R which I was assured was working, although the IP address is unknown. As I'm just starting to read up on CCNA material I thought I would be able to access it via the console port and put the thing to some use. However, using the correct cable and adapter and running Hyperterminal I can't get a connection, also tried running Cisco Configmaker and the device detection wizard, but it doesn't find the router. Device powers up ok, SYSTEM LED is steady, OK LED on front flashes, OK LEDs on Ethernet port and Flash card ports lit. Could the console port have been disabled, or have I bought a pile of junk?

Make sure the Bits per second on the port settings is at 9600 (In Hyper terminal). Hopefuly you are using a Serial port with a transiever (COM Port 1 or 2).
Tranciever plugs into a serial port, then you plug a roll over cable into the back of the tranciever via RJ45. Genarally Rollover cables are flat and are either blue or black... but that is not definate.
The only way to determine you have a rollover cable is to physically look at the wires in the jack.
Place each end side-by-side. The color sequence should be the exact oposite of each other.

Now you should be able to console into it.

Thanks for that Matt, but I'm using the correct cable/transceiver and correct port settings, any other ideas?

Reset the router with the console cable plugged in and see if you get any information flash up on your screen.

If no luck there, try plugging into the AUX port and see if you can get any responses there.

Not too sure about the transceiver by the way, my understanding was that a transceiver was the little box you use to convert twisted pair LAN connection to AUI 15-pin connector. You just need a rollover cable with the appropriate connection on either end - usually RJ45 on the router end, and 9 pin D-type connector to plug into COM 1. Usually the router will come with rollover cable and RJ45 to 9-pin convertor. This should have TERMINAL written on it, if it has MODEM written on it I don't think that will work. Can anybody confirm that last statement?
