Ok, now I have found a good program to use to create my help file and now I want to know, what the differnece is between .chm and .hlp files and which one is better to use.

The program creates a .hlp file and I know how to tie it into VB, but what are the pros and cons of the files.

Thank you

Jim

The .chm is the newer HTML help format while .hlp is the older format. I would vote for .chm as it is probably the way things are moving and more 'web compatible' - i.e. pages you generate in your help file could equally be used as pages on a web site.

It's a while since I touched a .hlp but the .chm was not hard to link into vb.

Hope that helps.

I agree with Glasgow. I use only .chm(s). You can get free software to create you .chm with your .html pages. I use HTML Help Workshop 4.7. You can open the chm in code with only 5 or so lines.

Thank you. I have been use Shalom to create the hlp file and it is an awesome software. I looked the HTML Workshop and I scratched my head and couldn't figture it out.

Is there a good place to go for help on using HTML Workshop?

Thank you

Jim

There are help files that come with the HTML help workshop.

There are a couple of faq's in this forum with information and links (faq222-1111, faq222-2088). As well as this forum itself.

Microsoft MSDN has information.

You can search and use the Microsoft HTML help authoring forum (forum764).

A google search should find even more information.
