This is a repeat question.
I am getting an error saying that I may have more than one instance in my init.ora.
One suggestion was for me to delete all instances from init.ora and recreate.
My question then, as it is now, is:
1, how do I check to see if I have more than one instance running? and
2, how do I delete the instance that is giving me the error.
What is happening is that any time I boot up my system, I have to manually start the instance or I will not be able to connect to the database even though service is set to start automatically once system boots up. I will an error such as "Oracle not available; shared memory realm exists"
Any will be greatly appreciated.
I spent so much time trying to figure this out on my own; now time has caught up with me.

Ok First of all if you are Using Oracle version lower than
8.1.7 with windows 2000 then this is a know bug in Oracle.
It has been Fixed in 8.1.7.

Now talking about the two instances .

It you have two services in NT Service dialog Box
whose name starts with "OracleService<instance_name>
then its mean that you have two instance.

Now you cannot have two instanc in one init.ora file for weach instance there is a Seperate Init.ora file.

But I think that if you able to start service manually , after boot then it is Oracle Know Bug.

if this is the case down load latest path for oracle 8.1.6
and you are done:))

Thank you faheem!
I thought it is an Oracle bug because my init.ora has only one instance; so does NT service dialog box.
The funny thing is I just upgraded to 8.1.7 from 8.1.6.
Infact I had to remove all old oracle products from regedit and I am using win2000 professional.
I guess I have to just continue to manually start service.
